Action Figure
- The masculine version of a doll that has jointed poseable (and sometimes removable) limbs. Typically, action figures are based on characters from movies, television, or comic books.

Acquire
- The act of obtaining an item.

Advertiser Collectible
- An item that features the name, logo, product, service, and/or mascot of an iconic company well-known for its advertising and promotions such as Coca-Cola.

Antique
- Something that has been in existence for 100 years or more and is, therefore, valuable and of interest to collectors because it is characteristic of a particular era/time period and style of creation.

Appraisal
- An evaluation performed by a professional to determine an item's monetary worth.

As Is
- Term used to describe an item being sold in its present condition, good and bad.

Auction
- A sale in which people bid on a item and the item is sold to the highest bidder.

Auction Premium
- The additional fee buyers pay on top of the final sold price at auctions.

Authentic
- Something that is real as opposed to something that is a fake or a reproduction.

Autograph
- Hand-written artistic signature of an author, artist, or celebrity.

Automobilia
- A combination of the words automobile and memorabilia, automobilia means collectibles that are automotive in nature.

Beveled Glass
- Glass cut at a 45-degree angle to create angled edges.

Bibliophile
- Someone who collects books.

Blister Card
- Type of packaging with a clear plastic bubble (blister) heat-sealed to a cardboard backing, used to display and protect small items like Hot Wheels.

Blunted Corners
- A term used in comic book collecting and grading which means the corners are no longer sharp, pointed, or square, having suffered from minor wear, compression, or softening.

Booster Pack
- A sealed pack of random trading cards.

CAMIS
- Abbreviation for the collectibles store 'Collectibles And More In-Store'.

Cel
- Short for 'celluloid', a transparent sheet on which objects are drawn or painted for traditional, hand-drawn animation. Characters were drawn on cels and laid over a static background drawing.

Certificate of Authenticity
- A document often referred to as a COA from a proper authority that confirms the legitimacy of an item by saying the item is in fact what it says it is.

Circulated
- Something that has moved from place to place, a common term used to describe coins.

Classic
- Something that is recognized as being of high quality and lasting appeal.

Cloisonne
- A process whereby metal wires are soldered onto a metal surface making outlines of patterns then the spaces between the wires are filled with colored enamel paste and heated so the enamel hardens and becomes shiny.

COA
- The acronym for Certificate of Authenticity.

Collectable
- The British spelling of 'Collectible'.

Collectible
- An item with certain qualities or characteristics that someone considers interesting, memorable, meaningful, attractive, or valuable either sentimentally or monetarily (they can offer capital gains potential and inflation protection).

Collection
- Multiple items with a related theme that a person has accumulated and gathered together.

Collector
- Someone that acquires, gathers, and amasses collectible items.

Collectors Item
- An object that was specifically produced for a high-end market targeted at collectors (i.e. special editions, limited-editions, commemoratives) that have historical significance, first editions, the only one of its kind, hard-to-find/rare, autographed, and/or used by its creator or a notable public figure. Also referred to as a "Collector's Item".

Commemorative
- Something created specifically to celebrate an event or anniversary.

Costume Jewelry
- An object that adorns the body made with less expensive materials and/or simulated jewels/stones and/or plated metals.

Cover
- The front of an album and an envelope or card carrying a stamp.

Curio
- An item that is considered distinctive, engaging, eccentric, and/or uncommon.

Demand
- How sought-after or popular something is. To say an item is in high demand means a lot of people want it.

Diecast
- The process where molten metal is forced under pressure into a steel mold to shape it. Also spelled die-cast.

Discophile
- Someone who collects vinyl records.

Entertainment Collectible
- An item that features the name and/or likeness of a personality/character featured in media such as television (live-action and animated), film, comic books, comic strips, and books/novels.

Exclusive
- Something elite because availability is limited to only a certain group intentionally excluding others.

Fair Market Value
- Estimated price an asset would sell for on the open market (not controlled by government), reflecting what an item is truly worth based on comparable sales and market conditions.

Filigree
- A technique where thin metal wires, often gold or silver, are twisted, curled, and soldered together to create delicate, intricate patterns.

First Appearance
- The very first time a character, team, or significant element (like a location, vehicle, or alter-ego) appears in a published comic book story.

First Day of Issue
- The first day an item is released to the general public.

First Edition
- The very first printing of a published book.

Foxing
- Small, brownish-red or yellowish spots and stains that appear on comic book paper.

Grade (Graded)
- Refers to the evaluation (usually done by a professional service) of an item to determine its condition and authenticity.

Hammer Price
- An auction final winning bid amount. It is the item's base price excluding any auction fees.

High Quality
- The description for how well an item was made (i.e. the development process, the technique used, materials used, etc.) which directly affects how long the item will last. Meaning high-quality items are above-standard and durable.

Hippieish
- Reflective of the 60s and 70s culture like a lot of flowers, bright or neon colors, psychedelic patterns, ribbons, lace, fur, short shorts, short skirts, knee-high socks, knee-high boots, bell-bottom pants, embroidered patches, Puka shells, crochet, bean bag chairs, black-lights, and lava lamps.

Knock-Off
- A non-licensed imitation of something made to look like another brand or item.

Limited Edition
- An item of which only a set quantity was produced and is thus marked with both its specific edition number and the total number of editions produced (i.e. 112/1500).

Lithograph
- An item created using a special method of printing whereby an image is drawn on lithographic limestone (or a metal plate with a grained surface) using oil-based inks then applied to a flat surface. The artist uses a separate stone or plate for each color in the image.

LP
- A long-playing record.

Mainline
- A standard basic (not a premium, themed, or exclusive) Hot Wheels vehicle which includes Treasure Hunts and Special Treasure Hunts.

Market Value
- Same as Fair Market Value.

Memorabilia
- Objects collected as souvenirs associated with a famous person, an important event, or a personal experience.

Militaria
- Military memorabilia with historical interests, such as weapons, uniforms, lapel pins, and awards.

Mint Condition
- Never been used, in perfect condition, and in the original packaging.

Near-Mint Condition
- Looks new; shows minimal to no wear; may or may not have the original packaging

Nostalgic
- Evoking sentimental thoughts and feelings for the past.

Novelty
- Something with a distinctive attribute, a unique or unusual characteristic, or that was recently developed.

Numismatist
- Someone who studies or collects coins and medals.

Original
- Existed first thus not a copy nor derived from something else.

Patina
- A natural thin surface layer that develops on materials like copper, bronze, wood, and leather through age, use, and chemical reactions, adding depth, color (like green on bronze) or sheen (on wood/leather) and indicating character and history.

Philatelist
- Someone who studies and collects postage stamps.

Premiums
- Promotional items, such as small toys, offered by companies for free, or at a low cost, with the purchase of another product as incentives to attract new customers, encourage repeat purchases, and increase brand loyalty.

Proof
- A special coin made for collectible purposes that has a brilliant mirror-like surface and sharp detail.

Provenance
- The documented history of an item’s ownership or origin.

Rare
- Precious because only a few exist which makes it particularly interesting and more valuable.

Real Riders
- Premium, soft rubber tires with realistic treads found on high-end Hot Wheels.

Redline Era
- The period from 1968 through 1977 during which Mattel released Hot Wheels manufactured in the USA and Hong Kong that had Spectraflame paint and a red stripe in a recessed groove of the tire sidewalls.

Redlines
- A Hot Wheels term used to refer to 1:64 diecast vehicles released between 1968 and 1977 which were manufactured in the USA and Hong Kong that had Spectraflame paint and a red stripe in a recessed groove of the tire sidewalls.

Replacement Value
- Amount of money needed to replace an item with the exact same or similar item in the current retail market.

Replica
- Something that is an exact match, or closely resembles, the original.

Reproduction
- A newly made copy of an older original collectible.

Restoration
- Improving or repairing a collectible to make it seem brand new again.

Retro
- Abbreviation for retrospect which means looking back. It describes something that's reflective of the trends 25 to 49 years ago such as a lot of curves, curls, swirls, earth-tones, light pastels, suede, leather, chenille, long skirts, long dresses, vests, high-waisted pants, and muscle cars.

Return On Investment
- An investment that will sell for more money than what you originally paid for it. Also referred to as an ROI.

Rookie Card
- The first sports trading card of a player after they've played at the MLB, NBA, NFL, or NHL level.

Scabbard
- A cover for a knife or sword blade. Also known as a sheath.

Scarcity
- When the supply of something is insufficient for the demand making hard-to-find.

Serigraph
- A high-quality item created using silkscreen printing whereby an image is drawn using a mesh to transfer ink onto an underlying layer.

Sheath
- A cover for a knife or sword blade. Also known as a scabbard.

Signature
- Reprint of a hand-written artistic autograph of an author, artist, or celebrity.

Slab
- A hard, tamper-proof holder used by grading companies.

Special Edition
- An item designed specifically for a particular occasion or focused on a particular theme thus it is different from how it is normally.

Spectraflame
- A Hot Wheels term used to describe paint that has a special shiny metallic finish.

Sports Collectible
- An item that features the name, likeness, and/or autograph of a sportscaster or player, and/or the name, logo, and/or mascot of a team and/or athletic association (not to be confused with the term Sporting Good which instead refers to equipment).

Stein
- A German word for a tall beer mug (also known as a Krug) made of ceramic, porcelain, glass, wood, or pewter. The more valuable steins have ornate hand-painted and/or etched designs on the body and/or handle and they come with a lid.

Super Treasure Hunts
- Mainline Hot Wheels vehicles with a limited production that have a gold flame logo on the blister card behind the car and sometimes also a TH on the vehicles. Labeled as TREA$URE HUNT$, they feature Spectraflame paint and rubber wheels and are produced in significantly lower numbers than standard Treasure Hunts.

Toning
- When comic book pages, cover, or edges turn from their original white or off-white color to a yellowish, tan, or brown shade.

Treasure Hunts
- Mainline Hot Wheels vehicles with a limited production that have a silver flame logo on the blister card behind the car and sometimes also have a TH on the vehicle.

Uncirculated
- Something that has never been used, a common term used to describe coins.
-
Variant
- A product released with alternate packaging, coloration, print, or features.
-
Vintage
- Something that has been in existence for a minimum of 20 years and a maximum of 99 years.

Woodblock Print
- An artistic "woodcut" technique for printmaking used throughout East Asia between the 17th & 20th centuries. In Japan, woodcut prints were called "Ukiyo-e" which means "pictures of the floating world"). Typically they featured motifs, landscapes, the theatre, or places of pleasure. The old-world technique required a team of 4 people (artist, carver, printer & publisher) whereby an image is carved into the surface of a block of wood (usually cherry wood). The wood's flat surface was covered with ink by an ink-covered roller to show the characters or images to be printed in black and the non-printing parts were then shown in white. The white parts were then cut away with a knife/chisel "along the grain" of the wood (unlike wood engravings where the block is cut in the end-grain). A separate block had to be used for each color.
