Tom and Jerry, created in 1940 by Hanna-Barbera, is a series of animated short films depicting the constant comedic rivalry between cat and mouse. Tom uses everything he can get his hands on (firecrackers, hammers, etc.) to trap Jerry and Jerry cunningly retaliates.
Although they are continually at odds with each other, they do share brief moments of camaraderie. Some consider the animated pair to be violent for animation but they are still a crowd favorite. From 1940 to 1958 the MGM Cartoon Studio produced 161 Tom and Jerry shorts which won 7 Academy Awards.
Then from 1961 to 1962, after the MGM Cartoon Studio closed, 13 additional shorts were produced by Rembrandt Films after which Tom and Jerry became the highest-grossing animated short film series of that time. Consequently, a number of spin-offs were made.
The spin-offs included The Tom and Jerry Show (1975), The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show (1980–82), Tom and Jerry Kids (1990–93), Tom and Jerry Tales (2006–08), and The Tom and Jerry Show (2014–present).
Moreover, their first feature-length film was released in 1992. And since 2002, 13 direct-to-video films have been produced. With Tom and Jerry’s 80th anniversary approaching, the Tom and Jerry Plate is a wonderful piece of memorabilia that makes a great gift for just about anyone.
