Speed Freaks Pontiac GTO
A unique item! This is a hand-painted stone resin sculpture of a hot rod. It was designed by artist Terry Ross. He intentionally distorted the hot rod so that it looks like it is moving fast at full throttle yet frozen in time. This hot rod is a cartoon style GTO. It is a lime green mean machine with wide tires. In addition, it has a turbocharger on the hood. The Speed Freaks Pontiac GTO is in excellent condition. This novelty decor makes a perfect gift for collectors, muscle car enthusiasts, and drag racing fans.
In 2004 at the NEC (National Exhibition Center) Spring Fair, Speed Freaks received the Gift of the Year award from the Giftware Association and the Best Men’s Gift by the Guild of Giftware Retailers. Here’s what the artist has to say about his sculptures:
When sculpting the originals I use an American product called Sculpey. Creating cartoon style cars means the rulebook goes out the window! Once I’m happy with the shape and movement I’ve added, the car gets heated in an over, which hardens the compound. I then spray the car in white primer and start sanding. Once everything is smoothed out I add the details, this is normally a mix of brass or plastic sheet and more Sculpey. So that’s roughly a month gone!
The car then gets cast in a marble resin and I get to start the painting. With most cars, I use genuine car colors. A mix of aerosols, acrylics, and graphic pens completes the details. Bases are worked out and drawn. Normally two masters are created. One stays here, the other goes off to the factory, where the cloning takes place. In all, about six weeks of work goes into each car.
Fun fact: The Pontiac GTO was selected as the Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1968. Then in May of 2010 Speed Freaks were featured in Motor Trends Magazine.
