Rare 1999 Wizard of Oz Set
This collector’s item is a six-piece limited-edition figurine set based on the six main characters from the iconic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (“MGM”) motion Picture The Wizard of Oz (“WOZ”). The set consists of Dorothy (holding Toto), Glinda The Good Witch, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Woodman (also referred to as the “Tin Man”).
This special collection was designed by the famous artist Ron Lee exclusively for (and acquired directly from) the Warner Bros. Studio Stores Gallery. Since then, the WBSS has closed its doors and sadly Ron Lee has passed away, which makes this movie memorabilia even more valuable.
Firstly, the figurines are sculpted metal and hand-painted. Secondly, the bottoms of the figurines were dipped in 24K gold plate and mounted on a marble base. Thirdly, Ron Lee’s 1999 copyright and the limited-edition number (#2364 out of 2500) are marked on every base. Fourthly, they each measure about 5″ tall x 2″ wide, and weigh approximately 2.5 pounds. Lastly, because this Rare 1999 Wizard of Oz Set has never been displayed, it is in mint condition.
The WOZ is a 1939 classic American movie musical. It is considered to be one of the greatest films in cinema history, making it an American pop culture icon. It’s not surprising then that it was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Ultimately though it did not win for best picture. Instead, it won for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Over the Rainbow”.
Consequently, “Over the Rainbow” is also considered an iconic piece of history. It was given the Towering Song Award by the Songwriters Hall of Fame. And in 2017, the Library of Congress entered it into the National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, and artistically significant”. Throughout the years it has charmed the hearts of millions. The American Film Institute even named it the best movie song over the past 100 years.
Furthermore, because the film has been so popular with both males and females of all ages, there have been numerous WOZ adaptations over the years including:
- The Wizard of Oz Stage Musical;
- Journey Back to Oz Animated Movie;
- The Wiz Stage Musical;
- The Wiz Movie;
- The Wonderful Galaxy of Oz Anime;
- Return to Oz Movie;
- Wicked Book Series;
- Wizard of Oz SNES video game; and
- Oz: The Magical Adventure PC/MAC video Game.
With such critical acclaim, there is no doubt that this Rare 1999 Wizard of Oz Set would make anyone happy.
