Presenting the antique Mettlach Stein (#2100) made by Villeroy & Boch in Germany in 1894. It is a 9″ tall hand-painted 1/2 liter beer stein with hinged molded pewter thumblift, and a beautiful decorative handle. The stein body is colorful with a fabulously detailed etched scene of Roman soldiers and barbarians. The stein says “prosit” which means “wishing good health”, a toast made before drinking. There are several markings impresses on the bottom of the stein as proof of its authenticity. It is incised with the 11th century Mettlach Abby and the Mettlach banner, as well as the “VB” trademark (for Villeroy & Boch). The bottom also reads “Gegen Nachbildung Geschützt (which means “protected against replica”) and “94” for the circulation date of 1894. There only flaw is the top of lid missing.
